He Almost Had Us Fooled

I had my OB appointment this morning.

As I was led into the exam room, I noticed they had not put the u/s machine in there. I reminded the assistant that we needed to check my baby's position and would need the u/s. She brushed me off with a "Well, let's see what the doctor thinks."

Doctor comes in. The practice I go to has seven OBs. Five are women (which I love) but I had not previously met today's doctor. She measured my belly and used the doppler to check baby's heart beat. All is well.

She wanted to do a pants-off exam. She took a culture (Beta strep? Maybe.) And she checked my cervix. One centimeter dilated. Honestly, the manual exam wasn't bad at all.

Then she said, "I feel his head. He must have turned."

Me: "That's fantastic! What great news!....but....can we do an u/s just to verify? It would give me some comfort."

Doctor: "Sure."

She left the room to get the machine. I got dressed and climbed back up on the table. I rubbed my belly, cooing to baby boy that he was such a good baby for turning. Doc came back in, flipped the switch, booted up the machine, gooed my belly...

And?

Baby BWUB must have a round, hairy butt that feels like a tiny baby head.

He is still breech.

The doctor said we should schedule the C-section. So now my boy has a birth date. March 11th. I got to choose the surgeon, which is nice.

My husband is really excited that we have something certain to look forward to. In just 20 days. He said "We have to get our nest all ready!" Yes, honey, we do.

And even though this is not what I would have chosen, if the choice had been mine, I will make the best of it. And in the end, I'm just looking forward to finally meeting my sweet little baby boy.

20 days!!! 20. Less than a month, just over 3 weeks and you will get to hold your little guy. I always think that the birth is an especially weird but fun surprise to moms using donor eggs/embryos. We honestly have NO IDEA what the baby may look like. Won't it be fun to just look at the precious little guy you have been carrying all these months? To top that off, you get to hold and kiss the little fella. March 11 will come so fast. I love your DHs comment

Wow, a real deadline! Good thing you insisted on that u/s, huh? Even thought it's not the way you would have picked it, there's something appealing about a c-section, at least to me. You know the date, you can get all your ducks in a row, less drama. Good luck getting the nest ready, so exciting!

Wow! 3/11/2010! A real actual birthday!

As usual, we are on track, I am 1 cm dilated and just had my strep culture, too - but no hairy butt-head. I will say that the C section thing has it's advantages, as far as planning (you can get a wax without wondering if it will last until the day there are fifteen people staring in that vicinity) and preparedness - plus, it's covered by insurance, unlike a doula...

And if the recovery is rough you can call me and I'll fill you in on all of the details of a non-C birth, and I'll play up the gruesome details for your benefit. (Although I suppose anything could happen - maybe I'll end up with the scar after all?)

I'm so excited for you my dear! The 11th of March sounds just perfect! But you know, I joined your blog just a couple of days after you found out you were pregnant, I was I think just starting stimming at that point (not that I'm less happy for you of course!!!). Much love, Fran

Congratulations! I'm glad DH is finally "getting" the fact that baby is coming, soon! Don't worry about every detail, if your crib isn't here yet, the baby will be fine in a bassinet or something, just make sure it is up high enough so you don't have to bend way over (cuz you'll be ouchie for a bit) I'm so excited for you, hope you are feeling fabulous.

That is awesome!! It's so exciting that you have an actual date now. So you'll have a little over a week off from work before your little guy arrives, that's what I did, too. Those will be great days.

And I know the C isn't what you really wanted, but here are some advantages to cheer you up:
- lady parts stay intact, DH won't feel like he's in the black hole the next time you, um...
- if you're a control freak who likes to plan, you can't beat this way of doing it
- you can really milk having your DH cater to you afterwards... practice saying "ouch, my incision" even if you feel great!
- two more weeks of paid disability. Well deserved for people like us who've had to spend $$ on conceiving!
- one word - episiotomy.

But seriously, I know what you mean about giving up the idea of a vaginal birth. We did miss the thought of wondering when he/she would come, that nudge in the middle of the night or the call during the day to say "it's time". But it was also pretty cool to go to bed the night before and know that the next morning, you'll have a baby!!!

Oh no, all the obvious butt head jokes are coming to mind! But I'm sure your son won't be a butt head!
YAYAYAY! March 11th is a great birthday!

Good thing you asked for the ultrasound! That could have been a bummer otherwise!

I still think it's so crazy that doctors can reach right up there and feel the baby though. I'm always amazed when my doctor tells me when she's reaching around my ovaries... It just seems so weird to me that it is all right there.
